Let Women’s Voices be Heard

The WWR and its members marked International Women’s Day with events that showcased the role of important women in the past to different audiences, while also highlighting the importance of gender equality in the present and the future.

The Association Women Writers Route, Forum of Slavic Cultures and the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Nova Gorica organised a literary walk through Ljubljana entitled “Navigators of their Destiny”. The guide, Mateja Kregar Gliha, led the participants along the paths of Slovenian women writers and other women who have made their mark on the cultural life of the Slovenian capital. Kregar Gliha highlighted the stories of Pavlina Pajk, Franja Tavčar, Marija Horak Murnik, Hedvika Radič, Luiza Pesjak, Lili Novy, Rozalia Eger, Marica Nadlišek Bartol and Zofka Kveder, among others. These women were revolutionaries in the way they acted and thought in times that were not favourable to women.

On 8 March, the most famous female names in the world of fairy tales were highlighted at Ivana’s House of Fairy Tales in Ogulin, Croatia. A video featuring Ivana Brlić Mažuranić, her contemporaries and their role in literature and human rights was shown. For the youngest children, a creative workshop was also organised, focusing on the importance of International Women’s Day and Ivana Brlić Mažuranić. Ivana’s House of Fairy Tales, the town of Ogulin and their tourist board are all members of the International Association of Women Writers Route.

The Ljubljana, UNESCO City of Literature Office, in cooperation with the Ptich Institute,  organised a free 8th-of-March cultural and tourist tour dedicated to women  literates. Pia Skušek guided the participants through the lives and works of (also contemporary) Slovenian women authors. The Vodnik Homestead Gallery promoted the  books and illustrations by women authors with a pop-up mini-bookstore and illustration exhibition.
